Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Hail Size Map?
Hail Size Maps are interactive maps with 14 color levels indicating hail ¾ of an inch to 4+ inches for any region, state, or multiple states up to the entire Continental United States. Our Hail Size Maps, powered by HailScope™, are scientifically accurate hail maps that show where hail fall has occurred. As the hail falls on the current day, our maps are updated every hour.

What does a Level 1 map represent versus a Level 5 map?

The Hail Rating Level is an objective measure of the relative impact of a hail event on a particular region. Factors that determine these levels include:

  • Hail size
  • Population density

Hail Rating Level values range on a scale from 1 to 5:

  • Level 1: Light, isolated hail
  • Level 2: Light to moderate hail in rural areas
  • Level 3: Light to moderate hail in populated areas
  • Level 4: Large and/or widespread hail in populated areas
  • Level 5: Extreme and very widespread hail in populated areas
